Singing and Winning at Silverstone

Posted by: redbullf1 June 22nd, 2009 at 5:07 pm

DC Meets The Fans

Red Bull Racing fan Emma Aitken was at Silverstone, cheering on the boys. Here’s her thoughts on the weekend.

Have you ever been surrounded by hundreds of people kitted out in McLaren and Brawn GP paraphernalia whilst screaming your lungs out because the two Red Bull Racers just came over the finish line in first and second place? Well I have – and it was fantastic!

The atmosphere at Silverstone this year was the best I’ve ever known it. There was a real sense of expectancy and nostalgia in the air, given that a Brit was looking the likeliest to take the chequered flag and this may well be the last time we would be able to see him do it at the Northamptonshire circuit.

It was also the busiest I have ever seen it, which was rather un-nerving when I found myself on stage at the Copse entertainment zone on Saturday, singing in front of a packed crowd for the chance to win a Golden Ticket to go to a special drivers autograph signing session.

As if I wasn’t happy enough after seeing Vettel take pole position, you should have seen me when I was handed that winning ticket! Unfortunately, when I got to the session the only driver still in attendance was Jenson Button, but hey ho. My brother had a better time of it back at the local golf course. David Coulthard was very much in attendance there, happily signing autographs and giving the fans plenty of photo opportunities.

DC Meets The Fans

Ultimately I was there for the racing; specifically Red Bull Racing and they certainly didn’t disappoint. I was already awe struck when the lights went green because there is absolutely nothing that compares to the noise of all those V8’s roaring in to life, but when I saw the RB5 of Sebastian Vettel just take off in to the distance leaving everyone in his wake I was dumb struck. Later on I caused a slight upset with the fans around me by leaping to my feet when Mark Webber came out ahead of Barrichello after his pit stop but I couldn’t be quietened.

Luckily, Formula 1 fans are a really friendly bunch, so even though it wasn’t Button taking the top stop of the podium, everyone sitting around me certainly gave the Red Bull Racing boys a fantastic reception when they appeared on the podium.

Champagnnnnnnnnnnnne!

If someone had of told me last Thursday I was going to have a weekend that involved singing for autographs, seeing Jenson Button up close and watching Red Bull Racing take a 1-2 finish I would have told them they were dreaming. It just goes to show; you never know what’s waiting round the corner.

Postcard From Silverstone Sunday: The Day We Won The British Grand Prix

Posted by: redbullf1 June 21st, 2009 at 11:57 pm

The celebs were out in force today. Everyone from Manic Street Preachers to an injured Leicester Tiger Toby Flood was keen to come and sample our hospitality, check out a winning car and meet the team.

Then we went racing, we won and we came second. You can’t actually get better and boy did it feel good.

It was also a nice touch that, on Fathers Day, Adrian Newey collected a winner’s trophy for Red Bull for the first time that his children were there to witness the occasion.

Sean Manic laps up the praise from Tom Kasabian...

Sean Manic laps up the praise from Tom Kasabian...

And after the race and the podium celebrations we seemed to gather a couple of other team’s guests including Leicester’s finest rockers Kasabian. Who were very rock’n’roll. It was interesting to see Tom Kasabian pay his resopects to Sean Manic by declaring that the latter’s new album Journal for Plague Lovers was: “…the best f*cking thing released this year by a f*cking mile.”

Several times over. But he does have a point.

On UK television, during their live commentary the BBC let slip there was a party organized by Red Bull Racing for the team after the race. And, by all accounts, it was a very good evening. If you’ve heard any of the rumours about the night, then they’re probably all true – we do know how to party at Red Bull, and this season we’ve had a lot to celebrate so far.

Roll on Germany…

Postcard From Silverstone, Saturday: Do You Know Who We Are?

Posted by: redbullf1 June 20th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

So… if we thought they were quick yesterday, today Seb, Mark and the RB5 really did drive fast. Only a Finnish fly in the ointment prevented Mark from repeating his feat last year of securing a Silverstone front row. But pole and the second row will do nicely – the car does look good around the British track. Not so good looking is the access in and out of the track. Silverstone used to be known for its never ending traffic jams. You queued to get in, you queued when you were in the circuit, you queued to get out then you queued to get away from the circuit. It was tortuous and probably the reason the helipad always sees so much action. The organisers’ ingenious solution? Make all roads incoming in the morning and outgoing in the afternoon. Simples. And effective too… unless you want to go the other way.

Which you might need to do.

This afternoon David Coulthard was due to make an appearance at Whittlebury Hall campsite, a good 300 yards down the road from the Media car park entrance/exit. So off he went, on his scooter, to meet the fans, sign autographs and spread a bit of Red Bull well-being among the fans. First he had to make sure he was going to get out and return. He stopped at the gate and politely asked the darkglassesandfluorescenttabard security guard if he could return through this entrance.

Security shook his head.

“I’m doing an appearance for the fans I’ll be 40 minutes and then I need to get back to do my work, is that OK?” asked DC. Politely, too.

Security shook his head.

“I just need to ensure I can do my job and get back in, surely you can see that?” asks DC. Again, in a nice, calm, pleasant tone of voice.

Security shook his head.

“Look, I hate doing this. But do you know who I am?” asks DC.

Security just looks blank.

“I’m David Coulthard, I’ve raced here 15 times and won it twice. I need to go meet the fans and then come back through this entrance. Is that OK?”

Security says (and this did actually happened) “Can I see your pass?”

So David Coulthard was allowed out and did get back to the circuit after meeting the very enthusiastic fans at Whittlebury Hall.

I wonder if the security at Donington will be as slick.

Postcard From Silverstone, Friday: Breaking News

Posted by: redbullf1 June 19th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

We woke this morning to the news that we’d be looking at joining the rest of the Fota teams in a break-away series next year. Hardly the most settled way to start the weekend, but it didn’t seem to unduly affect our pit crew or drivers. Unveiled this morning was the new-look RB5 with a nose which has been described as anything from a hammerhead shark to “…the most beautiful thing that I have ever seen in my life.” Who said that? We won’t embarrass him, but he works in Marketing. And it turned out to be a thing of great speed as well as great beauty. We were top two in both practice sessions and the car looked reliable as well as fast – a tribute to the hard, exacting work which had been done back in Milton Keynes.

But then F1 does have a habit of producing innovative solutions to situations. And not just on the track. There are no toilet blocks as such in Silverstone, rather a single cubicle behind each motorhome. And behind the Energy Station was one such cubicle where the electrics had blown. So rather than stumle around in the dark some bright spark had found a candle to provide light in the gloom. Only this wasn’t an ordinary candle but a beautiful, no doubt expensive vase containing a huge scented candle. Ingenious and expensive. Just how motorsport likes it.

FFriday was also a busy day. It seems the fans want to give Formula One at Silverstone a damn good send-off and were here in droves.

Let’s hope they get to see a decent Qualifying from the flying Red Bulls tomorrow…

Postcard From Silverstone, Thursday: Goodbye? Hello! Goodbye!

Posted by: redbullf1 June 19th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

So the final grand prix at Silverstone? The last time we unpack set up and welcome the British fans to the former Northamptonshire airfields…

Well it could be. The rumours flying aroud are that we’ll be back, Donington will get its race and Valencia will be come the Costa del Azahar Grand Prix or something.

But enough of politics – this evening we welcomed our guests into the Paddock and the Energy Station. Twenty fans came to visit us to have dinner and a drink and tour the garages and the Paddock. By all accounts they had a good time – for some the alternative was a chilly evening in the campsite, so a little relative luxury perhaps went a long way. We’ll be running similar evenings at other circuits this year… so keep checking back here and the main site

Because it is damn cold. Following Monaco and Turkey, it was winter jackets out to fight off the biting wind.

Rumour also has it there’s a big powwow amongst the FOTA team chiefs this evening before tomorrow’s deadline.

So… let’s hope we’re coming back next year for a British race what ever the venue.

If Alonso Were A Betting Man…

Posted by: redbull June 17th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Rumour has it that a certain former world champion is backing us to win our (*almost) home grand prix. The Spaniard told a senior member of our management staff that if he were a gambler, he’d be putting his money on Red Bull Racing winning at Silverstone this weekend. Let’s hope he didn’t tell Ross the same thing…

* Despite what they think in Shanghai, we are an Austrian team.
