Postcard From Silverstone, Friday: Breaking News
Posted by: redbullf1 June 19th, 2009 at 11:59 pm
We woke this morning to the news that we’d be looking at joining the rest of the Fota teams in a break-away series next year. Hardly the most settled way to start the weekend, but it didn’t seem to unduly affect our pit crew or drivers. Unveiled this morning was the new-look RB5 with a nose which has been described as anything from a hammerhead shark to “…the most beautiful thing that I have ever seen in my life.” Who said that? We won’t embarrass him, but he works in Marketing. And it turned out to be a thing of great speed as well as great beauty. We were top two in both practice sessions and the car looked reliable as well as fast – a tribute to the hard, exacting work which had been done back in Milton Keynes.
But then F1 does have a habit of producing innovative solutions to situations. And not just on the track. There are no toilet blocks as such in Silverstone, rather a single cubicle behind each motorhome. And behind the Energy Station was one such cubicle where the electrics had blown. So rather than stumle around in the dark some bright spark had found a candle to provide light in the gloom. Only this wasn’t an ordinary candle but a beautiful, no doubt expensive vase containing a huge scented candle. Ingenious and expensive. Just how motorsport likes it.
FFriday was also a busy day. It seems the fans want to give Formula One at Silverstone a damn good send-off and were here in droves.
Let’s hope they get to see a decent Qualifying from the flying Red Bulls tomorrow…
